Driving Scheduling Interaction Coherence

Driving Scheduling Interaction Coherence

Overview

Overview

Modern electric construction machines require battery pre-conditioning in severe conditions, which introduces new planning needs for operators. In this project, I focused on improving the in-cab Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for setting a timer that prepares the machine before the next planned operation.

Simultaneously, I took the initiative to work with a separate designer working on the mobile operator App to ensure our designs were aligned and cohesive across platforms.

Problem Statement

Problem Statement

Operators need machines to be fully charged, preconditioned, and ready at the start of their workday. Without a reliable and intuitive timer function:

  • Machine readiness is uncertain, causing delays.

  • Manual preparation wastes time and energy.

  • Confidence in system automation is low.

Early electric construction machinery customer expect a superior user experience and lower total cost of ownership. Without an intuitive and cohesive readiness scheduling results in:

  • Friction in adopting electric and digital solutions

  • Increased downtime and lost productivity

  • Higher support needs and training demands

Together with the other designer, our initiative not only aligned on the interaction pattern, infographics and terms for the scheduling functions, but also contributed to bridge the gaps among different teams and improve holistic user experience throughout the whole journey.

Reflections & Learnings

Reflections & Learnings

Driving cross-platform consistency without formal ownership of both digital touchpoints, I have sharpened my ability to:

  • Collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines while keeping user experience front and center.

  • Lead value driven product development process and set the tone for quality collaborations even without mandate.

  • Design for multiple touchpoints from a holistic and systematic perspective.
